New Moon in Aries – April 2019

The Aries new moon brings a bold new start.

Aries is the cardinal fire sign. Think of moment that smoking kindling catches alight; that is the feel of this new moon. It is the spark of ignition. The engine roars into life.

All you have to do is push the accelerator to take advantage of the forward momentum that this Aries new moon offers.

This is raw power and it can can blast through barriers – and there is a barrier to be blasted.

The first aspect made by the new moon is a square to Saturn in Capricorn.

Saturn is the cranky old planet of the solar system. He loves to say ‘no’ and tell you to stay off the grass. He gives you nothing but a hard time until you do the work and truly deserve the reward or recognition.

With Saturn involved in this Aries new moon, that bright new idea comes up against an immediate roadblock and you won’t reach your objective as quickly as you like – which, to be fair, Aries wants yesterday; Aries is not a patient sign.

The warrior rises to the challenge issued by Saturn in Capricorn.

Saturn is newly retrograde and also conjunct the South Node so the block is likely be an old, internalised fear that is ready to be released.

(If you’ve done the internal audit and still feel ready to go-go-go, you may clash with an external authority that blocks your way forward.)

Questions to work through at this new moon include: What’s holding me back? Who gives me authority to act? Am I bold enough to risk failure/censure/disapproval?

(Remember: Your new moon seed cannot grow in barren soil. That soil is enriched by compost/shadow/fears that you dig out of your psyche. This is an excellent activity for the balsamic phase of the moon.)

Something will need to be given up and you’ll be reluctant to let it go because it is associated with a sense of power (or powerlessness).

For many of us, it will be the need for social approval: the gold star from the teacher; the meaningless certificate from the employer; keeping up with the Joneses.

How much do you care about fitting in to what’s expected of you? What do you lose as an individual in these encounters with authority?

This new moon reignites your independence and encourages you to extend your middle finger to conservative social expectations.

The less resistance you put into fighting this limitation and the more energy you put into simply taking action, the more potential this new moon has to flourish.

The lunation ruler is Mars and Mars is currently in Gemini. Here, the warrior is agile and intellectual. Gemini and Aries are compatible active signs. From the amoral sign of Gemini, Mars can ably support the independent call of the Aries new moon with an audicious mindset and flexible tactics.

Don’t fear breaking the rules; bend them to your will. You are smart and can use the system to your advantage.

Say ‘goodbye’ to your inner critic (or to the external one that holds you back).

Embrace the childlike innocence and enthusiastic impulse to grow.

Be realistic about what you can achieve, but not foolhardy.

A quick mental rehearsal of probable outcomes provides an adequate safety net. Then it’s time to take that bold leap and see if you can pull off that amazing new trick. With a bit of luck, you will  emerge victorious.
